The next generation of prostate cancer biomarkers askmenhealth ...

Since the introduction of serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening 25 years ago, prostate cancer diagnosis and management have been guided by this biomarker.

Yet, PSA has proven controversial as a screening assay owing to several inherent limitations. The next wave of prostate cancer biomarkers has emerged, introducing new assays in serum and urine that may supplement or, in time, replace PSA because of their higher cancer specificity.? Such efforts have produced several notable success stories that involve rapidly moving biomarkers from the bench to the clinic.

However, biomarker research has centered on disease diagnostics, rather than prognosis and prediction, which would address disease management. The development of biomarkers to stratify risk of prostate cancer aggressiveness at the time of screening remains the greatest unmet clinical need in prostate cancer. We review the current state of prostate cancer biomarker research, including the PSA revolution, its impact on early cancer detection, the recent advances in biomarker discovery, and the future efforts that promise to improve clinical management of this disease.

House Shoots Down Bill That Would Have Stopped Employers From Demanding Your Facebook Password

facebook-privacy-1Well, that didn't take long. A proposed Facebook user protection amendment introduced yesterday in the U.S. House of Representatives has already been shot down. The legislation, offered by?Democratic Congressman Ed Perlmutter, would have added new restrictions to FCC rules that would have prohibited employers from demanding workers' social networking usernames passwords. The final vote was 236 to 184, with only one House Republican in support of the changes.

The pregnant ichthyosaur female from Holzmaden (Germany) that perished 182 million years ago puzzled researchers for quite some time: The skeleton of the extinct marine reptile is almost immaculately preserved and the fossilized bones of the mother animal lie largely in their anatomical position. The bones of the ichthyosaur embryos, however, are a different story: For the most part, they lie scattered outside the body of the mother. Such peculiar bone arrangements are repeatedly found in ichthyosaur skeletons. According to the broadly accepted scientific doctrine, this is the result of exploding carcasses: Putrefaction gases produced during the decomposition process cause the carcass to swell and burst. Through such explosions, even the bones of embryos can supposedly be ejected out of the body. Based on an elaborate series of measurements and an analysis of the physical-biological parameters, however, a research team of sedimentologists, paleontologists and forensic scientists has now managed to dispel the myth of exploding dinosaur carcasses.

Putrefaction gas pressure not high enough

In order to gauge the pressure of the particular gases that can actually develop inside a putrefying ichthyosaur, the researchers sought comparative models and found one in human corpses: Humans and many ichthyosaur species have a similar size range. Consequently, the formation of similar amounts of putrefaction gas can be expected during decomposition. At the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Frankfurt, Germany, a manometer was inserted into the abdominal cavity through the umbilicus in one hundred corpses. The putrefaction gas pressures measured were only 0.035 bar. In the case of the ichthyosaur carcasses that came to rest below 50 to 150 meters of water, however, putrefaction gas pressures of over five to 15 bar would have been necessary to cause an explosion. According to Zurich paleontologist Christian Klug, gas pressures of this dimension and therefore actual explosions are impossible: "Large vertebrates that decompose cannot act as natural explosive charges." And he is convinced: "Our results can be extended to lung-breathing vertebrates in general."

What actually happened 182 million years ago

According to the researchers, the fate of ichthyosaur carcasses can be reconstructed as follows: Normally, the bodies sank to the seabed immediately post mortem. In very deep, hospitable waters, they were broken down completely through putrefaction, scavengers, bone-destroying organisms and dissolving processes. In shallower water (up to 50 meters) and a temperature of over four degrees Celsius, however, the corpses often rose back to the surface on account of the putrefaction gases accumulating inside the body. At the surface, exposed to the waves and scavengers, they decomposed within anything from a few days to weeks and the bones were scattered over a wide area on the seabed as they sank.

Ichthyosaur skeletons only remained preserved more or less in their anatomical position under very special circumstances: A lack of oxygen, medium water depths and insignificant bottom water currents. Because only then were the putrefaction gases compressed strongly enough through the high water pressure and dissolved in the bodily fluids, and the carcasses not completely broken down due to a lack of scavengers. The carcass of the ichthyosaur female from Holzmaden thus sank to the bottom of the sea, which was up to 150 meters deep, where it decomposed. In doing so, the decomposed embryo skeletons were transported out of the body of the mother by minor currents at the seabed.

Analysis: Spain risks years without economic growth

MADRID (Reuters) - Belt tightening in the board room and the living room, deep public budget cuts and anaemic bank lending may be setting Spain up for years of economic stagnation that could eventually force it to seek a bailout.

Under pressure to chop Spain's deficit to the European Union limit and stick to new fiscal rules, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has promised to present a budget on Friday that will be "very, very austere".

With the economy on the verge of its second recession in three years, soaring unemployment and rising borrowing costs, some economists are predicting a lost decade of growth such as the one experienced by Japan in the 1990s from which it has never fully recovered.

Others, including Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti, say Spain could drag the euro zone back into a deep crisis.

"We've signed a suicide pact in Europe by agreeing that we all need to make cuts," said Luis Garicano economist at the London School of Economics and head of Spanish think tank Fedea.

"Europe has to recognize that this is a downward spiral that's not helping anyone."

With public debt at almost 70 percent of gross domestic product and one of the highest levels of private debt in the euro zone, Spain has been a focus of investors since Greece first appealed for international help in early 2010.

The economy is more than twice the size of Ireland, Greece and Portugal combined, and is seen as too large for the euro zone to let it fail.

Spanish government borrowing costs have fallen from 14-year highs reached last year but with economic fears resurfacing the risk premium over German bonds has started to rise again.

"If the government consistently runs large deficits in the midst of a very deep recession, or possibly both, then it's likely yields will rise," said Ben May of Capital Economics.

"There is a risk that eventually Spain will need to seek a bailout to borrow at reasonable rates of interest."

Rajoy's 2012 budget will include at least 35 billion euros of savings through tax hikes, wage reductions and public service cutbacks, in a bid to chop the deficit to the EU's 3 percent limit next year. The 2013 budget will be just as austere.

CONSUMERS DEPRESSED

As in other European economies, domestic demand was one of the cornerstones of growth in the boom years but consumers are no longer seen as the economy's potential saviors.

Celinda Garcia, 55, has run a delicatessen in a middle-class neighborhood of Madrid for 30 years and the four-year economic crisis had not affected her business until the most recent round of reforms and cuts.

"I've really noticed a big drop in sales in the last couple of months," she says.

"My customers mostly have secure jobs and a good income, but the latest reforms have left everyone worried for their future."

The economic troubles began over four years ago when a decade-long property bubble burst. The economy is expected to shrink 1.7 percent this year.

Housing prices fell 11.2 percent in the fourth quarter of last year and may still have another 30 percent to go. The construction sector has hemorrhaged jobs, putting millions of low-skilled builders out of work.

Unemployment is more than double the European Union average, almost half of young people cannot find a job and poverty levels are rising faster than anywhere else in Europe.

COMPANIES ON HOLD

Companies are also struggling. Even the most promising sectors are making cutbacks.

Tourism accounts for around 11 percent of gross domestic product. But listed Spanish tourism group Sol Melia had to sell assets in the fourth quarter to help reduce its debt.

Spanish tourism benefited last year from increased numbers of holiday makers avoiding troubles in northern Africa but even so Sol Melia was reluctant to invest at home.

"At this stage, with no significant booking position from early booking markets, we prefer to adopt a 'wait and see' stance, even more so considering the sluggish state of the Spanish feeder market," Chief Executive Gabriel Escarrer said.

Bank lending meanwhile has slowed to a trickle. The financial sector, which has already been through a round of mergers and consolidations, has been told by the new government to reinforce balance sheets with another 50 billion euros.

"I don't see any credit growth this year. It won't accelerate with the economic slowdown," a high-ranking financial source said.

The credit drought is hurting large, well-established companies as much as families brave enough to apply for a mortgage to buy their own home.

"We're one of Spain's healthiest companies but the banks just don't want to lend," said an executive at a blue-chip company who asked for anonymity.

His group can raise money in the bond markets but that is not an option for smaller firms.

ECHOES OF JAPAN

Some economists fear the outlook for the Spanish economy is worryingly similar to Japan's situation in the nineties.

A fiscal austerity drive in 1997 while the private sector was deleveraging at near zero interest rates prompted five quarters of contraction and the Japanese budget deficit ballooned.

"The recession will last much longer if the government continues to insist on fiscal consolidation when the Spanish private sector is deleveraging at the same time," Tokyo-based economist at the Nomura Research Institute Richard Koo said.

"The government should recognize that Spain is suffering from a very rare disease called balance sheet recession that happens only after the bursting of a nation-wide asset prices bubble financed with debt."

Interest rates in the euro zone are at record lows, but during a balance sheet recession, loose monetary policy will not stimulate new lending as it does during a normal economic downturn, Koo said.

"It took Japan 10 years to climb out of this policy mistake.?I hate to see Spain going down the same route," he said.

Philadelphia personal injury lawyer: A number of sorts of instances that will ?t be paid out without needing the expertise of legal counsel, and the like which you may be able to manage all by yourself. The advantage of having an legal representative is the fact he or she is expert in getting a entire arrangement coming from an insurance provider or defendant, and ought to know the way considerably your own assert is definitely worth. A problem would be that the solicitor?s fee is usually as almost as much as half of your own honour once prices along with other rates are usually extra. Basic instances, where injury is modest and also the error crystal clear are frequently paid out swiftly while using the insurance broker without having to hire legal counsel. Get the job done business balks in paying out, you can often get a full arrangement by simply filing a little boasts instance, since insurance coverage company?s valuation on going to trial is often beyond the money necessary for eliminating. Especially if you own entrusted your own instance to 1 within the much larger personal injury businesses, your own instance can be shoved on top of an affiliate who may have practically nothing with money to get by simply your instance in the intense approach. A prominent spouse recognized for a number of multi-million dollars court verdicts could simply n?t have plenty of time for your very little instance. Expect if perhaps a few clean confronted Twenty four hours years old becomes handed your own computer file. At this point don?t get me wrong. Countless youthful legal professionals are usually packed with energy for successful struggle with the companies. But a majority of are usually coping with a 100 and up different information and you can be affixed to a very slowly assembly brand.

personal injury lawyer Philadelphia: Worse yet, your relate could possibly have virtually no fiscal share offered in your case. A agreements vary from company so that you can company, however , within the the vast majority, the one lawyer who may have a financial fascination with your own instance is definitely the individual who added true in the company. A lowly relate which actually finally ends up producing true is undoubtedly about direct salary. Her fiscal motivation is usually to return his instances while using the lowest worry so that you can him, of course this implies eliminating true for under it is worthy of. In contrast, for those who hold on to any one practitioner or healthcare provider or tiny collaboration, your lawyer which manages your own instance will genuinely obtain attorney?s fees generated on the case. Nothing provokes as a fiscal motivation. Though legal professionals are usually fairly sure to zealously stand for your interests of most clients, will need to tell you that you might accomplish finest but if your lawyer features something to get by the intense and strong justice of your respective instance. Sandra Fluke Says She Didn't Know Target Sells Birth Control Pills ...

Sandra Fluke

Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke on ?The View? with Joy Behar and Sherri Shephard. (AP/ABC Lou Rocco)

(CNSNews.com) ? Thirty-year-old Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke, who told a House Steering and Policy Committee hearing convened by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi last month that contraception can cost a student $3,000 during law school, told CNSNews.com on Tuesday that she did not know that the Target store 3 miles from the Georgetown Law campus sells a month?s supply of birth control pills for just $9.

Target advertises the $9-per-month birth control pills on its website, and CNSNews.com confirmed and reconfirmed that the $9 pills were in fact available at the Target near Georgetown Law.

?Without insurance coverage, contraception can cost a woman over $3,000 during law school,? Fluke testified before Pelosi?s panel.

?For a lot of students who, like me, are on public interest scholarships, that?s practically an entire summer?s salary,? Fluke testified. ?Forty percent of female students at Georgetown Law report struggling financially as a result of this policy.?

?Just last week, a married female student told me she had to stop using contraception because she couldn?t afford it any longer,? Fluke testified. ?Women employed in low-wage jobs without contraceptive coverage face the same choice. You might respond that contraception is accessible in lots of other ways. Unfortunately, that?s not true.?

On Tuesday, Fluke spoke at an event at the U.S. Capitol in celebration of women?s history month. After the event, CNSNews.com asked Fluke: ?Were you aware of the Target store that?s 3 miles from Georgetown Law that sells a month?s supply of birth control pills for $9 a month without insurance coverage?? Were you aware of that??

Fluke said: ?So, I?m not familiar with specific department store policies. I know that some generic forms of contraception are less expensive than others and that that has been widely reported. But what has not been widely reported is that many women cannot use those forms of contraception.?

?Women have different types of medical needs that require much more expensive forms,? she said. ?One woman contacted me.? She was very, very upset that that quote was being emphasized because she has a genetic condition that requires her to use contraception that costs $1,500.?

?So, this is medicine,? said Fluke.? ?It?s not one-size-fits-all, and while it?s great that some women can access more affordable contraception, contraception needs to be accessible and affordable for all of the women who need all of the different kinds.?

CNSNews.com had initially reported on Mar. 5 that the pharmacy at the Target 3 miles from the Georgetown Law campus offers a month?s supply of Tri-Sprintec, the generic form of the birth-control pill Ortho Tri-Cyclen, for $9 for people without health insurance coverage for the pills.

In addition, CNSNews.com confirmed that a CVS pharmacy only two blocks from the Georgetown Law campus sells a month?s supply of the same generic birth control pills for $33.

Tri-Sprintec is an FDA-approved prescription drug. The Physician?s Desk Reference (PDR) says it is for ?prevention of pregnancy? and ?treatment of moderate acne? in women 15 and older.

Verizon adding remote diagnostics tool to latest LG Revolution update

LG Revolution

Verizon just gave us a heads up to a new update for the LG Revolution that, among other things, will add "Verizon Remote Diagnostics" to the smartphone.

Before anybody freaks out, Verizon describes this as a "new customer care solution to improve device issue diagnosis during customer support calls." You'll have to give a customer service rep permissions, and they they'll be able to "remotely view the user's device for troubleshooting and application demonstrations."

In other words, they'll be able to see and take over your phone -- again, with your permission -- to show and fix stuff. Different from a Carrier IQ-type analytics tool hanging out in the background (though we're willing to bet it's got full access to that same sort of information if need be). Should be interesting to see what folks pull out of this.

Other fixes coming down the pike in version VS910ZV8 include:

Device Enhancements

  • Resolved reboot issue found during operating system upgrade from Froyo
  • to Gingerbread.
  • Playing AVI video files through HDMI no longer causes display to flicker.
  • Placing an alarm on snooze while on a voice call will set snooze to 5 minutes.
  • Dolby presets have been updated to use loudness, bass and spaciousness
  • to improve the user’s experience.
  • When placing the device into Airplane Mode, the 4G icon no longer appears.
  • Email, Messaging & Web
  • Sending a text message to a 7 digit number will display as sent and received.
  • Improved device messaging to fix delays or incomplete sends.
  • Pressing the back key while browsing will take the user back to the previous page.

Applications & Widgets

  • Verizon Video is now preloaded.
  • Calendar widget now displays correct month for November.

It'll be interesting to see if this is just the first Verizon phone to have Verizon Remote Diagnostics added. Either way, props to Verizon for being up front about the addition.

Google's Flight Search engine adds 500 international destinations, more on the way

Google's Flight Search -- which was conjured up after its acquisition of ITA -- has been giving Kayak and Bing Travel a run for their respective dollars here in the States, but an airline search engine is only as good as its reach. This week, the company announced that over 500 airports outside of the US are now being included in the results (but, sadly, only if you start in the US), and while no specific promises were given, Google says that it's "working hard on expanding [its] global coverage and adding more routes in the future." Oh, and for those looking to disconnect in Samoa, APW totally made the cut here. Happy trails!

[Thanks, sciwiz]

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel halted its airstrikes against Gaza Strip militants early Tuesday and rocket fire from the Palestinian territory ebbed as a cease-fire ending four days of clashes appeared to be taking effect.

Both sides had indicated they have no interest in seeing the fighting spiral into all-out war, and an Egyptian security official reported that Egyptian intelligence officials had brokered a truce.

There was no official truce announcement from Israel or Gaza's Hamas rulers, but Israeli Cabinet Minister Matan Vilnai told Israel Radio the latest outbreak of violence "appears to be behind us."

And Daoud Shihab, a spokesman for the Islamic Jihad group responsible for much of the rocket fire, said that "the Egyptian efforts succeeded this morning and a deal was reached."

Months of quiet along the Gaza-Israel border were shattered on Friday with Israel's killing of a militant commander in Gaza whom it accused of plotting to attack Israelis.

At least 24 Palestinians, including at least four civilians, died in the cross-border fighting that followed, with the cause of another civilian's death in dispute. There were no Israeli fatalities, but the lives of 1 million people living in southern Israel were disrupted by frequent sirens warning them to take cover from incoming rockets.

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said more than 200 rockets were fired at Israel between Friday and the early hours of Tuesday, when the truce went into effect. Israel's new short-range rocket interceptor, the Iron Dome, destroyed dozens of rockets headed for southern Israel

The military said it carried out no airstrikes after the cease-fire took hold. Rosenfeld said four projectiles were fired at Israel after that deadline, causing no injuries.

Sporadic rocket fire from Gaza would not necessarily compromise the truce because militant groups are splintered and orders do not trickle down from a single commander. Still, as a precaution, schools in southern Israel that serve 200,000 students remained closed for a third day.

Although the fighting on the ground subsided, verbal sparring over the terms of the cease-fire persisted.

The Egyptian security official, speaking early Tuesday on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject, said Israel had agreed to stop targeting militants as a condition of the truce. Islamic Jihad leader Khaled Batch said the same.

"They gave the Egyptians a pledge they would stop the assassinations," Batch said. "This was a surprise not only to Egypt but a surprise to all parties."

But Vilnai brushed away that assertion.

"Whoever initiates terror should know he will always be in our sights as soon as possible," he said.

And senior defense official Amos Gilad, who was involved in the truce talks, said no such commitments were given. "Quiet will be met with quiet," Gilad told Army Radio. But "if Israel has to defend its citizens, it will do so without hesitation."

Because the two sides shun each other, the truce is not formal and there is no signed document that can serve as a reference.

Gaza's Hamas rulers had kept out of the fighting, letting militants from the Islamic Jihad and Popular Resistance Committees carry out the attacks on Israel.

Hamas wants to avoid a full-scale offensive against Gaza like the one Israel launched in December 2008, fearing a major conflict could undermine its control of the territory it violently overran five years ago.

But Israel considers Hamas responsible for all attacks from Gaza and notes that the militant group, which refuses to renounce violence against Israel, has amassed a bigger and better weapons stockpile since the war.

That's not a salad, it's a symphony

BEIJING (Reuters) - Vendors at the local market in Beijing could be forgiven for thinking that Nan Weidong and Nan Weiping run a restaurant. But the bags stuffed full of vegetables the brothers lug back home are used for a very different purpose -- musical instruments.

The two grew up surrounded by vegetables in China's central Anhui province, but their music teacher father encouraged them to learn conventional instruments from a young age. As teenagers, they joined a local theatrical troupe.

But it wasn't until two years ago that they thought of making instruments out of vegetables, an idea that has fascinated them ever since.

They now live and work in a narrow Beijing apartment, drilling holes in carrots, marrows, lotus roots and Chinese yams and testing the pitch against an old electronic tuner -- nibbling silently on the shavings all the while.

A sweet potato becomes a perky ocarina, a bamboo shoot a mellow, reedy flute. A row of carrots tied upright to leeks is transformed into a set of Chinese panpipes.

"The deeper the hole, the lower the pitch. The shallower the hole, the higher the pitch," said pony-tailed Nan Weiping, at age 41 the younger by two years.

"The size of the holes also matters to guarantee the quality of the sound. The leeks only serve as decoration."

But controlling the pitch is extremely difficult, he added, with changes in the air temperature and humidity potentially warping the shape of the holes, putting the notes out of tune.

Their repertoire is as varied as their instruments, ranging from traditional Chinese flute music to Western songs such as Auld Lang Syne.

The two have appeared on numerous talent shows in China and often receive payments of 30,000 to 50,000 yuan ($4,800 to $7,900) for a performance -- their sole income. Each show requires making a whole new set of instruments.

Though the size and shape of the vegetables is important, the utmost importance is placed on freshness, said Nan Weidong.

"If the water content in vegetables evaporates, the tune will become higher than the basic tune, or even out of tune. Therefore we choose vegetables with as much water content as possible," he said.

"The vegetables have to be solid and hard. We can't use vegetables left over for days. They are too soft to be played."
