Finding Listed In Search Engines

hfnahnnih on November 4th, 2012

What exactly is search engine optimization? Search engine optimization is designing, writing, and coding (in HTML) your entire web site so that there is a good chance that your web pages will appear at the top of search engine queries for your chosen keywords and essential phrases. The majority of the search engine optimization specialist?s time ought to be spent targeting the search engines that will give you the most site visitors. The following search engines and directories are:

AltaVista
voip solutions
AOL Search

Business.com

Rapidly Search

Google

HotBot

LookSmart

Lycos

MSN Search it services

Netscape Search

Open Directory

Overture

Yahoo

The very best time to request search engine optimization is before you design your internet site. As your internet site designer creates page templates for you to approve, you can have a search engine optimization specialist take a look at them and tell you which layout is greatest for optimum indexing. When you have chosen the very best layout for your net internet site, then the search engine optimization specialist can tell your designer when and where to location your search phrases and crucial phrases within your HTML tags.

How can you tell a high quality search engine optimization specialist from a scam artist? A search engine optimization specialist really should be in a position to get your website indexed nicely for Google, Inktomi, and Yahoo. The two search engines and 1 directory differ in the way they index web sites. Google does not use meta-tag content material for relevancy. Inktomi at present makes use of meta-tags. And Yahoo is a directory. Ask how your web site will be developed and tagged for every single of these. If you don?t get 3 diverse answers, then you must move on to a a lot more knowledgeable search engine optimization professional.

If your net internet site has currently been created, a skilled search engine optimization specialist will frequently advocate layout and design modifications. He/She is not telling you that you have a poor-hunting internet internet site. He/She is telling you that the site?s layout will not get indexed properly for your targeted key phrases and important phrases. For instance, a web site that has a triple frameset (on the top rated and on the side) is incredibly tough to get indexed nicely on search engines, even with a gateway page. Nevertheless, a basic frameset can get indexed properly in search engines, with or with no a gateway page. A search engine optimization specialist can style or tell your web internet site designer how to lay out a basic frameset to get the greatest outcomes.

Search engine optimization and other advertising techniques (banner advertising, internet copywriting, getting listed in Yahoo, posting to discussion groups, etc.) are not substitutes for a net internet site with solid content material and excellent layout. Search engine optimization is not a substitute for customer service, a excellent sales pitch, or a great item/service. It is not a substitute for a properly-planned on the internet and offline marketing and advertising plan. Search engine optimization is a signifies of helping your prospective buyers locate your internet web site. It is a highly specialized marketing and advertising tool.

Taliban demands unbiased coverage after shooting 14-year-old

Pakistan's Taliban insurgency faces a spate of bad press in mainstream Pakistani outlets related to the jihadists' failed assassination attempt of?Malala Yousafzai, a young blogger who dared protest the Taliban's ban on educating girls.?Now the Taliban are plotting terror strikes on TV stations and other media organizations, but local newspapers refuse to stay silent.

The first report of these plots were surfaced by an urdu-language reporter on Saturday, who uncovered a special directive by the chief of the banned Tahreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Hakimullah Mehsud. As local newspaper?Dawn?reported, "Mehsud directed his subordinate to target the offices of media organisations in Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Islamabad and in other cities of the country especially those media organisations and media personalities who were denouncing TTP after attack on child activist Malala Yousufzai." In response, the Interior Ministry has beefed up security near media organizations. But the Taliban are still whining.

Yesterday, local paper? The News International?gave?voice to the Taliban's pathetic complaints of bias, which offered a rare window into terrorist media criticism. TTP spokesman Ihsanullah Ihsan said his group would "continue to respect journalists" except for highly biased outlets. The spokesman for another Taliban insurgent group, Sirajuddin Ahmad of Maulana Fazlullah, spoke at greater length:

He said media provided an opportunity to all those people who were opposed to the Taliban and their activities and used insulting language against them on media. ?Right from UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to Hillary Clinton and President Obama, all of them used whatever bad language and words they could use on the media but when we tried to reply to them, no media organisation was willing to give us importance. The media is not even allowed to use the real name for Maulana Fazlullah but calling him derogatory names like Mulla Radio,? Sirajuddin complained, but refused to admit that they planned attacks on the media.

Wow,?Columbia Journalism Review,?here we come. Clearly Pakistani reporters should be giving equal weight to the pros and cons of shooting children in the face.?

The Taliban is mad because the rest of Pakistan is mad at them over the shooting. "Undoubtedly this is the worst press the TTP has ever had, there is no doubt," Rana Jawad, Islamabad bureau chief of Geo News, told? The Guardian's?Islamabad correspondent Jon Boone. The Taliban have been furious that justification for the attack, that the girl was being "un-Islamic," was not being placed prominently in news stories. Muhammad Amir Rana of the Pakistan Institute for Peace Studies, says the Taliban are taking a PR beating. "We have seen a similar public sentiment in the past, but this time it is quite unique," he said. "This case has provided a catharsis of the masses for all the grievances that have been building up for years."

Apparently, the insurgent groups just aren't very media savvy, according to Mullah Yahya, a former high-ranking Afghan Information Ministry official, who spoke with? The Daily Beast's Sami Yousafzai.??First of all, attempting to kill a 14-year-old girl is a low act,? he said.???Second, claiming responsibility for it is a sign that the [Pakistani] Taliban are not aware of the media?s importance. I have seen more anger against the religious elements in the past week than in all my 40 years of life.? So here's to you, Pakistani press. You've defied the all-too-common media trap of false equivalence.?

Hake'sEdStuff: Re: Casualty of the Math Wars

Some blog followers be interested in a recent post ?Re: Casualty of the Math Wars? [Hake (2012)]. The abstract reads:

*************************************************
ABSTRACT: Scott Jaschik (2012), in his exemplary Inside Higher Ed report ?Casualty of the Math Wars? at http://bit.ly/V1ZSL2 wrote (paraphrasing):

?Jo Boaler http://bit.ly/R6XsuP, a full professor at Stanford University argues that new approaches - group work, real-life examples, and solving problems students can relate to - have the potential to transform the way students interact with mathematics. Traditional methods, which emphasize students learning key principles and facts, have resulted in schools in which too many students feel early on that they just ?don?t get math,? and shy away from the subject. So why does Boaler feel under siege?

On 12 Oct 2012 she posted on her own website ?When Academic Disagreement Becomes Harassment and Persecution? at http://bit.ly/Wpel7t , an account of what she terms unfair personal and professional attacks in an unpublished critique ?A Close Examination of Jo Boaler's Railside Report? at http://tinyurl.com/czsa4c by James Milgram of Stanford University and Wayne Bishop of CalState-L.A.

Of her critics, Keith Devlin http://bit.ly/P503sg director of the Human Sciences and Technologies Advanced Research Institute at Stanford, said ?I suspect they fear her because she brings hard data that threatens their view of how children should be taught mathematics.? He said that the criticisms of Boaler reach ?the point of character assassination.?

Alan Schoenfeld http://bit.ly/NGfW62 of the University of California at Berkeley, a past president of the American Educational Research Association and past vice president of the National Academy of Engineering, said ?The discussion of Boaler?s work ?fits into the context of the math wars, which have sometimes been argued on principle, but in the hands of a few partisans, been vicious and vitriolic.? He said that he is on a number of informal mathematics education networks, and that the response to Boaler?s essay ?has been swift and, most generally, one of shock and support for Boaler.? One question being asked, he said, is why Boaler was investigated and no university has investigated the way Milgram and Bishop have treated her.

Foolproof Advice For Home Improvement Projects ? Christian ...

iMemories - Preserve Your Memories on DVD

Home improvements can satisfy a variety of different desires for any homeowner, from the desire to improve a home?s value, to a need for a more livable space, to a simple interest in seeing something new. You will find great advice to use if you are considering making changes to your home.

Putting new carpet in your home is a home improvement that will definitely change the look and feel of each room in your house. Not all carpet is created the same. Take special care when you?re selecting the type of carpet you want. You will often be able to obtain a sample to bring to your home.

Put a ceiling fan in. It?s easy and relatively inexpensive to do this, so it?s a good first home improvement project. Ceiling fans are not only easy, but they save on energy while also remaining easy on your wallet.

As much as a fifth of all heat and cool air in homes is lost through windows. By glazing your large, picture windows, you can significantly cut back on the loss of heat and cold air. Your home will be more comfortable inside, and your energy bills will decrease.

Before your home improvement job begins, make a call to check on the insurance coverage of your contractor to make sure it is current. Contractors know that being properly insured is a big selling point for their services; this is why less ethical contractors may try to use expired documentation to give a mistaken impression about the current state of their insurance.

When improving your home to increase value, don?t neglect your front porch. These are among the first pieces of your home that visitors see. Apply some fresh paint, and decorate it with some pretty plants. You may be surprised to know that your investment in improvement may be considerably less than the value it adds to your home. These small things add up and can be a difference maker in your home?s value.

Place battery-operated LED lights that turn on automatically into your closet. Believe it or not, you can find these at dollar stores and department stores. A few of them require a few screws to put them in place. Some are even easier with sticky pads. These lights are designed so that they turn on when you open the closet door and shut off when you close it!

Get new metal fixtures for your bathroom. You can find items such as toilet paper holders, towel racks and cabinet knobs in many shapes and finishes. Many retailers offer such fixtures in packages with coordinating patterns and colors which can all be in place within a few hours of starting this simple improvement project.

Only EPA-certified stoves should be purchased if you?re looking into purchasing a stove that burns real wood. This kind of certification is universal for modern wood-burning stoves, but the same strict emissions standards need to be met by older stoves. Carbon monoxide is a big concern when it comes to burning wood inside of the house, so be sure to check your stove for leaks.

As you are planning your home improvement projects, look for inspiration. Go to the local book store or library to browse books and magazines on decorating. Get color samples and fabric swatches from your home improvement store. You will have time to weigh the options and decide how best to approach your project.

If you are considering major structural modifications to your floor plan, then employ an architect to draw up your plans. If you choose not to hire a contractor, your plans are likely not to materialize well. A professional has the knowledge to consider building codes, structural requirements and the design of functional plans to build your project.

As you are working to plan home renovations, do so during the first few months of the calendar year. You are likely going to be experiencing a tight budget due to the holiday expenses, so you will have a good idea of how much money you have to budget for the project. Having little to work with may help you create a very frugal budget, indeed!

Search for a quality roofer as this is a very important improvement to your home. Ensure you find out if the roofer is reputable before hiring them. Make sure the company checks out with positive online reviews to reduce the chance of getting ripped off.

As you might know now, home projects can be easier than you think. By undertaking a project, you are improving the look and value of your home while also gaining experience for new ventures. Use the information learned in the above article for your next home improvement project.

China and Afghanistan sign economic and security deals

China and Afghanistan sign economic and security deals

Posted on 23 September 2012 by GGS News

Kabul,(GGS NEWS) : China has signed security and economic agreements with Afghanistan during a rare trip to Kabul by a top Chinese official, in deals seen aimed at bolstering Beijing?s influence ahead of a NATO withdrawal of most combat forces by 2014.
Zhou Yongkang, China?s domestic security chief and a member of the ruling Communist Party?s central Politburo, made an unannounced visit to the Afghan capital late on Saturday, holding talks with Afghan President Hamid Karzai at his garden palace.
Zhou?s visit was the first to Afghanistan by a senior Chinese leader since 1966 and followed a visit by Karzai to Beijing in June when both countries agreed to cooperate on combating extremism in the region.
During the talks, held under tight security after violent protests in Kabul over a film which insults Islam, Zhou signed agreements on increased security and economic cooperation, including a deal to help ?train, fund and equip Afghan police.?The agreement was not specific on how much assistance China planned to give the 149,000-strong police force, which is currently trained by the NATO-led coalition.
?It is in line with the fundamental interests of the two peoples for China and Afghanistan to strengthen a strategic and cooperative partnership which is also conducive to regional peace, stability and development,? Zhou said in a statement, according to China?s official Xinhua news agency.
Resource-hungry China, which has a small border with Afghanistan in the country?s mountainous north-eastern corridor, is keen to invest in Afghan resource deposits worth as much as $1 trillion (Dh3.673 trillion), based on US Pentagon estimates.
Chinese state-owned miner China Metallurgical Group (MCC) operates the $3 billion Aynak copper mine in eastern Logar province, which has been subject to rocket attacks and other raids by insurgent groups looking to disrupt operations.
MCC won the contract to develop Aynak in 2008 and it was originally scheduled to begin production in 2013, but work has been delayed by the discovery of a huge and significant archaeological site in the area.
Zhou?s visit underscores the concern in Beijing about a deterioration in security as the NATO presence in Afghanistan winds down.
It also comes after Karzai last week voiced concern about strategic pacts signed with chief ally the United States earlier this year ahead of talks starting in three weeks? time on a continued US troop presence in Afghanistan beyond 2014.
Zhou had originally been scheduled to travel to Turkmenistan following a visit to Singapore, but diverted to Afghanistan for the meeting.
The Chinese government fully respects the right of the Afghan people to choose their own path of development and will actively participate in Afghanistan?s reconstruction, Zhou told Karzai, according to Xinhua.
Karzai said security in the region ?depends on the relations between Afghanistan and its neighbours,? presidential spokesman Aimal Faizi said, with both countries agreeing to expand their so far limited ties.

Akamai: Global Average Broadband Speeds Up By 25%, U.S. Up 29% To 6.7 Mbps

akamai state of the internet earthGlobally, the speed for broadband connections is steadily on the rise: according to Akamai's Q1 2012?State of the Internet report, it's now at 2.6Mbps, compared to 2.3Mbps in the last quarter, and a rise of 25% on a year ago and a reversal of the 14% decline of last quarter. South Korea continues to remain the connection king, with an average connection speed of 15.7Mbps. The U.S., meanwhile, doesn't make it into the top-10 countries (it's ranked 12th) but at least it's speeding up: it is now at 6.7Mbps, up by 29% on last year and 17% from the previous quarter. But as broadband continues to improve, so do attacks. Akamai notes in its study that attack traffic is on the rise, concentrating in particular regions and ports, with Asia Pacific, led by China, accounting for 42 percent of attack traffic originating from Asia Pacific; and the top 10 ports for attack traffic accounting for 77% of all attacks (up from 62% last quarter).

Apple And Amazon Close Security Holes That ... - Business Insider

Apple has temporarily plugged the security loophole that allowed Wired editor Mat Honan to be brutally hacked over the weekend.

Honan's hacker was able to reset Honan's Apple ID password over the phone using the last four digits of Honan's credit card number.

The hacker was then able to access Honan's Twitter account, Gmail, and remotely wipe Hona'ns iPad, iPhone, and MacBook. Apple has decided to suspend over-the-phone Apple ID resets, at least for the next day or so, according to Honan's latest update on Wired.

The hacker was able to get Honan's last four credit card digits from Amazon, which makes that information public.?Amazon has reportedly closed that loophole too.

UPDATE:?Apple just reached out to us with an official statement regarding its policy for resetting Apple ID passwords. The company confirms it has temporarily suspended over-the-phone password resets and encourages customers to change their passwords online.?

Here's the statement from Apple spokesperson Natalie Kerris:

We've temporarily suspended the ability to reset AppleID passwords over the phone. We're asking customers who need to reset their password to continue to use our online iForgot system (iforgot.apple.com). This system can reset a password in one of two ways ? either have a password reset sent to an alternate email address already on record or challenge the customer to answer?security questions they had previously set up. When we resume over the phone password resets, customers will be required to provide even stronger identify verification to reset their password.

Linking Water Access and Women?s Rights Towards a New Model for Upward Mobility in India

Ashoka Peace??? Yobo Member
July 27th, 2012

michaelnewport/Flikr

By: Tsega Belachew

Editor?s Note: This article was written by Andrea Boston who is a writer with Ashoka Changemakers.

For?Ashoka Fellow Biplab Paul, a series of natural disasters cleared the way for prosperity.

At just 10 years old, Paul experienced a devastating flood growing up in India?s West Bengal state. Years later, after receiving a master?s degree in economics, his interests in philanthropy and environmental education brought him across the country to Gujarat state, where severe drought plagued the poorest of citizens.

Seeing the long-term affects of two very different natural catastrophes convinced Paul that without access to water, people?especially women?in underserved communities had little chance of upward mobility.

Paul then set out to develop a women-led irrigation system that relies on rainwater harvesting and tackles the issues of water scarcity, gender inequality, and poverty.

In Gujarat, high saline levels prevent rainwater from penetrating the soil. Without water, farmers are unable to tend to their crops and are eventually forced to look for work elsewhere.

Biplab Paul?s organization, Naireeta Services Private Limited, borrows loans to install large underground reservoirs, which can provide farmers with much-needed water for up to seven months. Groups of five women are selected to operate the system and sign five-year contracts to repay service and construction costs through their cash crop.

This system earned Paul the?Anil Shah Memorial Award for outstanding work in rural development last year, setting a standard for agricultural innovation and women?s empowerment in India.

Changing Roles

Today, Paul receives numerous accolades and awards for his work, but it didn?t come without its challenges. Locals were initially skeptical of the new women-led system, but were eventually sold on its influence and authority. This has led to an important cultural shift in Gujarat.

?In India?s patriarchal society, changing people?s perception of women?s roles takes decades of time,? he said. ?But one impact is very clear. The primary occupation for men is agriculture, and irrigation is essential for their livelihood. Now, to get a single drop of water for irrigation, men have to approach women members for their permission to gain access.

This automatically gives women the upper hand on a critical resource, which translates as a recognition of women?s role in society.?

The Best Form of Flattery

No good deed goes unnoticed, and Paul?s work has attracted quite a few copycats replicating his model?an act that Paul actually welcomes.

?Imitation is the certificate of success,? Paul said. ?Our technology is being imitated like wild fire and more than 4,000 units have been erected in the last three years.

Although not all of these units are functioning properly, we don?t believe in making a monopoly market of our technology. Based on that principle, we refrained ourselves from taking a patent on the technology. The logic is simple?if we are planning to work for and support the poor, then why should we make the technology under our control?

The technology is open source so that anyone can use it. We do have a non-negotiable principle, however?that the technology should be used for poor people only.

Mother Approved

?In my university days, my parents said, ?a blunder has been made by our only son by deciding to opt for working in rural development without knowing what development is!? It was very hard to digest,? Paul said.

?But in 2010, my mom said with a smile that, ?my son is not earning well, but he has made great developments, not for him but for a good number of people whom he had never met before. I am proud of him.?

I think I can slog in rural India in scorching temperatures for another 100 years to hear these sweet words from my mom and bring a smile to many more moms in this beautiful world.?

EYES ON LONDON: A queen's approval, Chinese gold

LONDON (AP) ? Around the 2012 Olympics and its host city with journalists from The Associated Press bringing the flavor and details of the games to you:

___

HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE

Seems even the queen can't resist the opportunity to act with Daniel Craig.

The British monarch didn't need much persuading to take part in the brief flick that electrified the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony, says Jackie Brock-Doyle, the spokeswoman for the organizing committee.

"She liked the whole concept Danny brought together," she says ? presumably right down to the detail of having the queen's corgis, Monty, Holly and Willow, similarly take starring roles.

The matter was presented to her majesty by organizing committee chairman Sebastian Coe last year.

CLOSE SHAVE

British gymnast Louis Smith knows a thing or two about making a statement. The eccentric 23-year-old ? the 2008 Olympic bronze medalist on pommel horse ? is known as much for his well-coiffed hair and elaborate tattoos as his elegant routines.

A couple of days before the biggest ? and perhaps final ? meet of his life, Smith slipped out of the Olympic village to his home in Peterborough to visit his barber.

"I could have used one in the village, but I didn't want to tell him he was doing it wrong," Smith said.

He returned with a distinctive do, with shaved sides and a meticulously groomed flowing flattop.

Smith says the "hip" cut is designed to grab the kind of attention he thinks the sport needs.

___

AN AMAECHI MOMENT

Strolling through security to enter Olympic Park, former British basketball star John Amaechi says he has been quite pleased with how his home country has opened these games.

The center paired with gymnast Nadia Comaneci to take the torch to the roof of the North Greenwich Arena earlier this month and is eager to see how Britain opens against powerful Russia in its men's basketball opener on Sunday.

"It's been wonderful so far, but the real work hasn't even started," Amaechi says. "That will tell the tale."

I SEE BY YOUR OUTFIT ...

Dressed head to toe in the British flag ? or, rather, AS the British flag ? Mick Burn wanted to find a spot along the road course to cheer cyclist Mark Cavendish.

But his outfit was so extreme, the man from Watford in Hertfortshire couldn't make it more than a few feet (meters) at a time without being stopped by fans wanting to pose for a picture with him.

"I've been mobbed all day," he says. And he's delighted by that fact.

It took him almost two years and 200 pounds (more than $300) to assemble the outfit, which consisted of everything from "posh golf pants," a waistcoat, his watch, eyeglasses and even his underwear. The toughest item was the sport coat, which cost him 50 pounds (about $75) on eBay.

Burn had thought his niece, rower Lucinda Gooderham, would be competing in these games. She didn't qualify, but he vowed to keep fine-tuning the outfit for Rio.

SMOOOOOOOOOOTH

"Louis Smith as smooth as strawberries and cream on pommel horse. It's like he's in slow motion, control in amazing." ? AP's Will Graves tweets from the gymnastics venue. A spectacular pommel horse by Britain's Smith capped the day for the British, who finished almost 2.5 points ahead of China with at a total of 272.420. Team finals are Monday.

GHOST TOWN

On a Saturday lunchtime, London's main shopping area, Oxford Street should be packed. Saturday afternoon, it is surprisingly empty of the usual crowd of Londoners and tourists. Were there a lot of late nights last night at opening ceremony parties or are the crowds in different parts of London enjoying the events?

___

SPIRIT WILLING?

Not everyone in London is infected with the Olympic spirit. A couple of hundred demonstrators have gathered to protest the gigantic corporate and security sides of the games. Among them is one woman with a home-made cross stitch sign declaring: "Bugger the Olympics."

Beneath it, a second one adds: "And the Jubilee." Apparently she's no fan of the monarchy, either.

Most of the protesters say they don't object to the sporting competition. But they resent being told they have to support the games.

MY LEGS WERE SHAKING

American Timothy Wang is already out of his first Olympics.

He lost his first table tennis match in four straight games on Saturday to North Korean Kim Song Nam. The experience lasted just a few minutes, beaten 11-5, 11-4, 11-7, 11-4 in the knockout tournament before about 4,000 fans.

He probably spoke for many first-time Olympians ? and even experienced ones ? about being very nervous.

"I walked out and as soon as everyone started cheering, I started to get goose bumps. My legs were shaking while I was playing. The nerves definitely kicked in. I tried to focus before the match, but I really wasn't expecting it when I came out. Over here every match is like center court and all the eyes are on you. In tournaments in the U.S., very few people are there."

___

ROYAL SIGHTING

It's just how she likes it. Princess Anne crossed the road in front of me in Green Park. And, despite the crowds, she went mostly unnoticed, although there was a smattering of cheers.

The queen's daughter is as low-key as a British royal can be. And the British public seems to respect her wishes.

___

TECH FAIL

Japanese volleyball coach Masayoshi Manabe is missing his trusty iPad. Turns out there's no wireless for the coaches to use at the Earls Court venue, something that isn't going over well.

"There is no wi-fi available here. All the teams are in the same condition. We are talking to the organizers," Manabe said through a translator.

Japan swept Algeria 3-0 in the opening match. For now at least, looks like they can do without technology.

FIRST GOLD

And the first gold medal has gone to China. Yi Siling has just triumphed in the women's 10-meter air rifle shooting.

___

SLOW PHELPS

Michael Phelps was surprisingly slow in the 400-meter individual medley prelims Saturday. He barely made the field and will swim in Lane 8 in the final.

No big deal, right? All lanes are the same.

Not exactly, according to a tweet from former Olympic swimmer Summer Sanders: "Lane 8 is worse than Lane 1 because Phelps breathes to the right on the way home. He won't see the rest of the field."

?Jon Krawczynski ? Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/APKrawczynski

___

I CRIED LIKE A BABY

London Mayor Boris Johnson says he spent all night dreaming about the opening ceremony and thinks it was better than China's stunning show four years ago.

"Call me chauvinistic, call me jingoistic, but I think we knocked the spots off Beijing last night," Johnson said.

"From the beginning I was crying like a baby. I just thought it was brilliant."

He lauded the cultural complexity of Danny Boyle's production.

"We weren't just Beefeaters and Big Ben. It was the real story of this country," he said.

? Shawn Pogatchnik ? Twitter http://twitter.com/ShawnPogatchnik

___

BILL GATES

The table tennis venue is abuzz with talk that Bill Gates will show up on Saturday ? and he'd see a familiar face in young American singles player Ariel Hsing.

The 16-year-old Californian is friends with Gates and fellow billionaire Warren Buffett, having played demonstration matches against the two earlier this year at Berkshire Hathaway's annual meeting.

She knows them well enough to call them "Uncle Bill" and "Uncle Warren." Is that cool or what?

___

NEWSPAPER REACTION

"BLAST-OFF!" thundered the Daily Mail; "Quirky and eccentric ... oh, how very British," judged the Daily Express; "TORCH OF GENIUS: QUEEN IN SKYFALL," was the Daily Mirror's take.

The Times led with a screen grab of James Bond, the queen and her corgis strutting down the red carpet of Buckingham Palace. Its headline: "Shaken and stirred."

The Sun, world famous for its in-your-face headlines, simply said "WOW" on the front page, with "FLAMING FANTASTIC" inside.

WHO'S IN CHARGE?

There's a battle for authority at points along Saturday morning's cycling road course. Even soldiers are being ordered around.

A military man in uniform demanded to be allowed to cross the road. A female police officer told him he could go through the gate, but the volunteer refused to open it. They all argued before he climbed atop the gate, saying simply "I'm crossing!"

He then fell hard on his knees on the pavement.

___

EARLY GOLD RUSH

The action's well underway, with Britain hoping for an early gold in the men's cycling road race. Elsewhere, swimming heats began, with Michael Phelps, who won eight gold medals at the Beijing Games four years ago, looking to qualify for potentially his first of the London Games.

HUGE AUDIENCE

Who says the collective television event is dead?

The BBC says 27 million people watched its coverage of the Olympic opening ceremony ? almost half the entire British population. That's even more than the 20 million who watched last year's royal wedding.

N.J. organization teaches kids anti-bullying through martial arts ...

The goal of the three-part evening was to educate and train children and parents in the intellectual or developmental disabilities community on current anti-bullying laws and the discipline of a fitness routine

Gallery preview

SPRINGFIELD ? Jonathan Marin called out "ke ahp," Korean for "yell," as he leaped and dodged a foam blocker-bat a martial arts instructor swung at his ankles. A circle of children around the boy cheered.

There was a time when Jonathan could scarcely look another person in the eye, let alone participate in an activity, such as this one in Union County, with a group of rambunctious peers.

The 11-year-old boy has autism, but that?s not what closed him off, his mother said. It was the bullying he experienced at school, directed at him for his developmental disability, that was the real cause of his introversion.

"During fifth grade he became more aware of what his deficits were, but also the kids in his class became more aware and they targeted it," said Victoria Marin of Norwood in Bergen County.

There were jabs during basketball practice, snide remarks about misspelled words and other kinds of cruel chiding that left the young boy sitting alone in the cafeteria every day.

Last week, Jonathan joined about a dozen children, some of whom have intellectual or developmental disabilities, and their parents in an anti-bullying workshop presented by the Family Resource Network, a statewide organization dedicated to disability education and support services.

The goal of the three-part evening was to educate and train children and parents in the intellectual or developmental disabilities community on current anti-bullying laws and the discipline of a fitness routine.

The program, held at the Hwang Martial Arts studio in Springfield, included a talk on cyberbullying, a "Kids on the Block" puppet show about children with disabilities and a martial arts demonstration.

"There?s a lot of information about anti-bullying laws and what they mean and we want to empower all students to understand them," said Adenike Sonaike, a coordinator with the organization. "It?s especially important for this group since they have a higher probability of being bullied.

A Lancet study funded by the World Health Organization?s disability department said this month that children with disabilities are about four times as likely to experience bullying as those who do not have a disability.

Technology has only increased a bully?s reach.

"Years ago, bullying was being pushed by someone, embarrassed in front of friends. You didn?t walk that way home anymore," said Sgt. Michael Hoose of the Union County Prosecutor?s Office. "But when you got home, you were safe. The doors were locked, your parents were there. Today there is no safe haven for a child to go to escape bullying."

Hoose told parents about the dangers of posting one?s whereabouts on websites like FourSquare and Facebook in his lecture on cyberbullying and internet safety. He even encouraged parents to have their children leave their cell phones in the kitchen overnight.

"I?m not telling you take everything away, but do not use this technology if you?re not going to understand the ramifications," he said.

Natalie Hiott-Levine of Millburn in Essex County performed a "Kids on the Block" skit about what it?s like to be a child with an emotional disorder in a mainstream classroom. Hiott-Levine said she got involved because she wants her son?s peers to better understand what it means to have a disability.

Her son, Zach, who has multiple disabilities, attended the event, asking the puppets questions and kicking along to the martial arts demonstration.

"He hasn?t experienced any bullying," Hiott-Levine said. "But this is a way of preparing him for what he could face."

After listening and watching, the children were eager to get up and move for the martial arts portion of the evening. Paul Del Sordo, who teaches pediatric martial arts, said the discipline teaches self-regulation, builds self-esteem and increases muscle tone and range of motion.

"Kids with the inability to handle group sports come in here and the group itself is independent so you do your own thing. But at the same time it?s social, so you?re part of the group," Sordo said.

For 11-year-old Jonathan, the key to finding a sense of security was ballroom dancing. His experience inspired his mom to write a children?s book called "Aiden?s Waltz."

"He is a remarkably different kid from December," Marin said. "Two weeks ago, he danced his first cha-cha with his sister in front of an audience. Whether it?s dance or martial arts, it?s all about finding activities that helps a child be successful, that focuses on ability rather than disability."

San Diego Comic-Con: 10 Things We Learned At Sony Panel

SAN DIEGO ? Sony hit San Diego Comic-Con's Hall H with guns blazing this year. Literally. We saw Joseph Gordon-Levitt blasting hapless, hooded victims with shotguns and Jessica Biel aiming pistols at futuristic hovercrafts. Then there was Milla Jovovich firing off rounds while spin-kicking enemies and Matt Damon brutally sticking it to the "haves" in a dystopian future.

Blood was spilled and bullets flew, with the future (and the apocalypse) a consistent theme, as stars and filmmakers presented previously unseen footage from the similarly themed sci-fi epics "Resident Evil: Apocalypse," "Total Recall," "Elysium" and "Looper."

Here are a few key things we learned, in no particular order.

1. "Resident Evil: Retribution" is the beginning of the end for the franchise.
After debuting two minutes of the nine-minute "fight to the death" scene between Alice and Jill Valentine, writer/director Paul W.S. Anderson told the crowd "Resident Evil: Retribution" is "definitely the beginning of the end. Everything is coming to a climax. This movie has a lot of big revelations in it and it has an awful lot of death in it." The franchise mastermind's real-life wife, Milla Jovovich, revealed, "He did tell me an idea for [movie] #6. He said, 'I really want to bring this to closure. If we did do another one, I really want to sort of end this story.' "

2. Playing a suburban mom with no fighting skills was "horrifying" for Milla Jovovich.
For a portion of the new movie, Alice thinks she's just an average mom living in the 'burbs. When crazed creatures burst in, she has no martial-arts training, weapons or other abilities to rely upon. "It was horrifying because, to be honest, I didn't really appreciate what it was like to be a superhero until I played a normal person in the 'Resident Evil' world. Normal people have it really bad. They just run and scream and get killed, like, horrifically."

For Anderson, these moments were an important choice for the latest chapter. "We tried to make the movie [bigger] in terms of scale and action but as small and intimate as possible in terms of the Milla character," he explained. "She has a child, she has a husband."

3. The cast of "Total Recall" slept with director Len Wiseman (OK, maybe just one of them).
It's no secret that married couple Kate Beckinsale and director Len Wiseman fell in love while making the "Underworld" movies together. "I'm still offended that you thought of me as this psycho-bitch wife," she joked about her role in "Total Recall." Biel jokingly declared that "the cast couch is not dead!" and added that the vivid world envisioned by Wiseman was part of what drew her to the movie, "besides, of course, sleeping with Len."

4. Colin Farrell didn't try to fill Arnold Schwarzenegger's shoes ? but he almost tried his accent.
All of the folks involved with the "Total Recall" remake noted how different their film is tonally from the 1990 original, which was filled with absurd humor and one-liners. Accordingly, Colin Farrell worked to make the character made famous by the Austrian Oak his own.

"I didn't feel the need to fill those size-18 shoes or whatever size foot Arnie has," Farrell said of Arnold Schwarzenegger. "The film felt different enough that I could go and make it my own." The actor also said he didn't consider using his native Irish accent in the film though, he joked, "I suppose I could've. Is it too late? When is it released?" "I did think about messing around with an Austrian accent ? terrible idea? for about seven minutes," he noted.

5. Jessica Biel's "Total Recall" training: boxing. Bryan Cranston's: drinking.
"Total Recall" is filled with high-flying stunts, tons of mixed-martial arts fighting and even a bit of wall-climbing Parkour for its leads. "I just had loads of chicken, went to the gym, drank protein shakes and tried to get a good night's rest," Farrell explained of his physical preparation. "You do have to train as an athlete would," Biel added. "Eating well, exercising, martial arts, the Parkour; boxing, boxing, boxing, boxing ... and chicken." As for Cranston's villain role? "I was training at night in the bar. Len and I would drink a lot and then we would come up with our character," he said.

6. Kate Beckinsale will put her action experience to work against her daughter's boyfriends.
"I wasn't born like Jessica wielding a javelin and running full tilt," Beckinsale said of he co-star. "I was born sitting down and reading a book and eating something." Be that as it may, the British born actress has certainly developed many skills while making the "Underworld" films and "Total Recall." Her daughter is now 13, she said, so she intends to put those chops to work as a "deterrent to the eighth-grade boys."

7. Joseph Gordon-Levitt went to great lengths to play a young Bruce Willis.
In "Looper," which reunites JGL with the writer/director of the critically acclaimed "Brick," Gordon-Levitt plays an assassin confronted with the task of killing his future self. Without falling into straight imitation, the young actor immersed himself in the entire Bruce Willis filmography, even listening to the actor's voice on his iPod and donning minor prosthetics on his face onscreen.

"I didn't think an impersonation would be appropriate anyway, I thought it would be distracting. I tried to internalize him," Gordon-Levitt told the Hall H crowd. "I watched all [Willis'] movies on repeat. I took the audio from his movies and put them on my iPod so I could listen to them. He recorded some of my voiceover lines and sent them to me so I could listen to them. I've been a fan of his ever since I was a kid."

8. The #1 reason Matt Damon made "Elysium" was "District 9."
The crowd roared their approval at the first extended look at filmmaker Neill Blomkamp's follow-up to "District 9," which envisions a futuristic dystopia, where the rich have escaped to a fancy space station while the rest of humanity toils away down below. Damon plays a world-weary everyman with five days to live who goes to great lengths to change the way things work.

"It was a very easy decision for me," Damon explained. "After I saw 'District 9,' if Neill had called me up out of the blue and said, 'This is Neill Blomkamp, will you be in my next movie?' I would have said yes." Damon said Blomkamp's name belongs right beside Scorsese and Eastwood.

The filmmaker came prepared with what Damon described as an incredibly detailed "graphic novel" on his computer. "There was a whole corresponding book of weaponry, a whole other book of vehicles. There was no question he couldn't answer about the world of 'Elysium.' I'd ask him questions as a joke sometimes," Damon smiled. For example, Damon questioned Blomkamp about why the space station was tilted a certain direction, and the director came back with details involving the position of the sun and NASA studies.

"It's really fun to work with somebody like that who actually does have all of the answers," Damon said.

9. "Elysium" filmed at the world's second largest dump. Fecal matter and pig urine were everywhere.
A few key scenes in "Elysium" were shot at the second-largest trash dump in the world. The crew wore respirators as dust, comprised mostly of fecal matter, was kicked up by helicopters and eventually covered the actors from head to toe. During one scene, Damon's stunt double was trapped under a bunch of riled-up pigs that proceeded to urinate all over him. Damon never regretted choosing the role, though.

"Being a writer also, given that you normally have a lot of lead time, I try to think objectively," he told a fan of his acting approach. "In the case of 'Elysium,' Neill and I sat down and objectively said, 'What are the things I need to do to accomplish this?' You can knock those down objectively: 'I need to work out four hours a day, I've got to shave my head' ... It's kind of that way with all the roles. I try to think about all the little details, 'cause it's always in the details."

10. Jodie Foster loved "Team America: World Police." And so did Matt Damon.
Getting covered in fecal dust isn't the only thing Damon has a sense of humor about. When an audience member brought up the movie "Team America: World Police," which viciously lampoons celebrities, including Damon and his "Elysium" co-star, Jodie Foster, the pair professed their love for the flick.

The guys behind "South Park" went after Damon in the film, aided of course by puppets. "Some people think it's my best performance," Damon joked good-naturedly. "When autograph-seekers come up, I've signed more of the puppet pictures [than anything else]. Unfortunately, I can't take any credit for 'Team America,' because I didn't work on it," he lamented. "I'd like to. Those guys are geniuses."
